Man and Ezer Kenegdo

I love good Regency novels.... when I ran across this quote in one of my favorite authors I took note.

I loved its clear reference to woman made as "ezer kenegdo."  English writers translated this to mean a subordinate, less than the other, a mere helper. That fit with the preconceived social constructs of women as "less than" or secondary to the male in society and the legal systems.

In the original language, however, that references one able to stand alongside, face to face even, and support, render aid, and contribute to the survival of all that was faced. Of note, this is a word most often used in other scripture references to refer to and describe GOD.

Not subordinate, not secondary, not less than ... rather, a worthy companion on the journey able to provide support and assistance and so much more.
