In Biblical studies the prophet is a messenger between God and humanity. The prophet is a visionary, a seer, given divine impressions, message, or information to be conveyed to the people. The prophet was someone on whom the Spirit of God descended, anointed, or in some other means used to achieve specific goals.
The prophets warned of the consequences of abandoning the faith, of forgetting to whom they belonged as created children of God, and foretold events that would happen in the future. All of this under the direct influence of God in an ecstatic episode.
The role was not easy and not one usually sought after. Some prophets even attempted to escape from the role by running away.
